Accenture poses a good point in terms of innovation in the healthcare facility. Many organizations are set out to achieve goals of pushing the envelope that will propell them to be ahead in the industry, but often times these seem more of lateral moves or “renovations”. These are caused by deficiencies in process, investment and leadership that limit the potential growth that these organizations possess. Out of the various Quality Award Winners that we have examined throughout this course, I feel as if majority of these health organizations do rather “small” innovations. For example, when talking about Advocate Good Sam Hospital, they had implemented block scheduling to help with more efficient schedules for healthcare providers. This innovation helped the organization when it came to more efficient workflow and employee satisfaction which is great for hospital numbers and retention of both employees and patients. This is the same with Kindred where they listened to their community and trained CNAs to help with transportation to and from the hospital. Henry Ford Health System is more on the liberal side of innovation where they implemented “the Perfect Depression Program, which uses an evidenced-based, integrated approach to address chronic depression; Home Health Services, Pharmacy Advantage, and OptimEyes (optometry care)” (Henry Ford Health System, 2011). As well as creating a new building that is completely unorthodox to traditional healthcare organizations to serve as a “main street feel”. All of these are great innovations that most definitely help with growing the organization. However I do not feel as if these organizations have tried to pursue groundbreaking new processes or infrastructure. A trend that I have noticed after writing these case studies is that many of these organizations utilize collaboration with their stakeholders to help innovate certain aspects but never pursue anythign that will shift the whole environment of healthcare or disrupt the normal workings in the industry. 


Yes, Malcom Baldwin Quality award winners have been able to avoid the limitation in innovation that is noted in Accenture article. The limitations that are found in the innovation in healthcare industries are the following the leadership skill fail to flourish due to a lack of organizational ownership and long-term financial support. This means that when there is any idea it has to pass from one rank to another which it does not go forward.

The other limitation is that is the process which means it is disruptive most of the healthcare industries forecast on the small innovation in other ward the renovation and forgetting the big innovation which can be of more value and long terms. The other limitation is organizations have prioritized short-term financial results over investing for the long-term for their innovation initiatives. Kendall, (2017).

According to Malcom Baldwin Quality Award winners solve this limitation in main three ways one is the organization need to incorporate innovation and the vision, mission and value of the organization especially the leaders and employee need to know and follow. The other point is that the organization need to evaluate the SWOT analysis of the company which help to see the weak and the strength. Duarte, Goodson and Dougherty, (2014)

The analysis is used to determine critical success factors like pillars goals, objectives, and action plans for the future. Finally, the Malcom award suggest the involvement of the stakeholders in innovation especially the patients and doctors will have many suggestions which can be used to improve the healthcare industry.
